CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:

This course is a leadership course, designed to teach a method, give examples, and provide an experience of creating and communicating as an authentic leader of change. The foundation theory of the course is that innovation and collaboration require commitment rather than compliance; and that leadership is therefore becoming more personal and more public.

Deciding to lead requires far more than merely telling people what you think or feel. It requires a level of emotional intelligence that allows a leader to reflect on his or her own behaviors, traits and skills and to deploy them in a way that inspires others to contribute from their own passion and conviction.

This is not a course in public speaking or presentation skills. However, in realizing the objectives of the course, each student is required to create a leadership message that conveys both competence and trustworthiness, based on the application of three principles:

Discover What Matters: What does the leader believe in? How does a leader relate his/her values to change initiatives in the workplace?

Finding Voice: How can the leader create and deliver communication that is both clear and deep, that gives rise to inspiration in him/herself
and others?

Connecting with Others: What devices are effective in messages that elicit the responses of commitment and a desire for partnership?

Message topics are the students' own choice, based on their life experiences and deep interest. Participants will develop messages around those topics that reflect both clarity and depth, both objective purpose and subjective meaning. Each topic is explored for its metaphorical or direct implication in the world of business.

The course does provide a structure that forces students to ask questions of themselves and to develop a complete effective communication. We then explore and practice dialogue with a model for eliciting an authentic response from others. Those who take the class should be willing to do critical thinking around a particular topic, write for clarity (not for grade!), practice in front of others, listen and adapt to feedback, and give constructive criticism of peers. Throughout the course, each person will work to refine one message, stressing the elements that work to
provide conviction in yourself and others.
