PREREQUISITE(S): Instructor consent or completion of Healthcare in the 21st Century (MBA 297A.1)

CLASS FORMAT: Lecture, guest speakers, discussion

REQUIRED READINGS: Students will be required to read all distributed course readings ahead of the appropriate class lectures and to also conduct individual company research ahead of each guest speaker.  In addition, students will be required to conduct their own research in support of their final paper.  Grading will be based in part on the degree to which positions taken in the final paper are supported by the student's independent research

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this course is to provide students with insights into the newest innovations in healthcare service delivery, information technology, and medical devices. Through presentations by leading entrepreneurs in the field, students will be challenged to reach conclusions regarding which healthcare sectors are the most promising for venture investing and which individual companies presented reflect the best opportunities. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Jeff Rideout, MD currently serves as the SVP and Chief Medical Officer for the TriZetto Group, a leading healthcare IT firm, majority owned by Apax Partners. Before joining the firm, he was with Cisco Systems, serving as their Chief Medical Officer and leading the healthcare division of their Internet Business Solutions Group. Previously, he was the Chief Medical Officer for Blue Shield of California.

 

Lisa Suennen is a founder and Managing Member of Psilos Group, a leading healthcare venture capital firm focused on companies that improve quality and reduce cost in the new healthcare economy. Previously she was a senior executive at healthcare firm Merit Behavioral Care Corp. Ms. Suennen is also Vice Chairman of the Advisory Board of the UC Berkeley Institute for Governmental Studies.
