CLASS FORMAT: During
the wine speaker series, which will consist of 10 sessions, guest speakers will
join us to discuss various aspects of the wine industry. Class sessions
will include lectures about oenology and the wine industry and is open to
everyone, from wine newbies to sommeliers!
*Please note that the first class meeting for this course
will be on 1/30/18.
REQUIRED
READINGS: There is no textbook or reader for this class, although we
will try to provide background material on the speaker prior to each class.
COURSE FEE: There
is a fee of approximately $180 (final amount TBD) to take the
class. This fee covers all wine tastings, dinner for all classes, and an
end-of-year wine event. Please PayPal wineclub@haas.berkeley.edu no
later than the second week of class.
BASIS FOR FINAL
GRADE: Grades will be based on attendance, which is mandatory. Missing
more than two classes will result in no credit. If you cannot make it to class
you will be required to find someone to fill your spot.
ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S
CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: The Wine Industry Speaker Series is a holistic survey
of the production, distribution, economics, marketing, and culture of oenology
and the wine industry. Each class will present a specific aspect, with experts
sharing the intricacies of the wine business. All classes will include wine
tastings of some of the top wines on the market today and give you the tools to
be a distinguished wine drinker and purchaser.
This perennially popular class promises amazing speakers, significant learning,
excellent wine, and great company.We will cover
everything from small family wineries selling direct to consumer, to grape
sourcing for the biggest names in the business, and everything in between. We
will also have experts on wine journalism, criticism, and emerging trends in
the wine industry.
LOGISTICS: Wine
glasses will be provided for students. Students will be responsible for
maintaining and cleaning the glasses between classes. Broken/missing glasses
will result in a $15 replacement fee.
Students will be split
into groups, and each group will provide dinner for one meeting during the
semester (paid for using the class fees). More details will be provided
when the class starts.
