CLASS FORMAT: Guest speaker
presentations about their experience in Sports Management, Q&A, networking with speakers.
REQUIRED READINGS: Reviewing
speaker bios prior to class is highly encouraged. Sometimes guest speakers may
prepare material and request for class to read ahead.
BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: Weekly
attendance and class participation. Grade will be pass/fail. Since there are
only 5 sessions, no more than one absence is allowed in order to receive a
passing grade.
ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND
OBJECTIVES: This one-unit course aims to educate Haas students about the
various roles individuals play within Sports Management, and to increase the
depth and breadth of these career opportunities available to Haas students.
Each week, two guest executives will speak for one hour on their career path,
their firm's business and culture, their experiences in the position, and
concluding with an opportunity for students to ask questions. Speakers will
hail from professional teams, sports governing bodies, sports apparel, and the
fitness sector and are expected to include executives from Cisco, Google, The North
Face, Nike, the Oakland Raiders, the San Francisco 49ers, the
San Francisco Giants, and the Pac-12. Roles of the speakers will vary
from finance to business development to marketing.
This course is for students who aspire
to work in the sports industry, as well as those simply interested in learning
more about life in sports. The Sports Management Speaker Series
is sponsored by the Sports Business Club, with the goal of building a
strong, unified and innovative sports community on campus.
