ABSTRACT OF COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:

"You manage things, you lead people.  We went overboard on management and forgot about leadership. It might help if we ran the MBAs out of Washington," Grace Murray Hopper, American computer programmer and inventor, once said.

She was correct that "leadership" and "management" are not synonymous.  In this 1-unit course, students will learn about the six different leadership styles - Pacesetter, Authoritative, Affiliative, Coaching, Coercive, and Democratic - and examine how each is used to solve managerial challenges. The first session will include a lecture from Prof. Jennifer Chatman and a self-assessment.

Each subsequent week, guest speakers from diverse fields such as fashion, law enforcement, and food entrepreneurship will speak for one hour about their leadership styles.  Class will conclude with an opportunity for students to ask questions and network with the speaker.

This course is for students who aspire to be strong leaders and effective managers. The Leadership VS Management Speaker Series is sponsored by the Consortium for Graduate Study in Management.
