This course will be on the following six Wednesdays: 10/17, 10/31, 11/7, 11/14, 11/21, and 11/28.

 

PREREQUISITE(S): None.

 

CLASS FORMAT: Speaker series.

 

REQUIRED READINGS: Students are expected to come to class with a general understanding of each speaker’s background.  Students should also be prepared to participate in the Q&A session that will follow each speaker’s presentation.

 

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: Attendance and class participation.

 

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of MBA294.11 is to provide students with a general introduction to the various segments of the real estate industry through discussions led by local professionals.  Industry segments that may be addressed include commercial and residential development, REITs, private equity, investment banking, brokerage, investment sales, consulting, architecture, homebuilding, lending, affordable housing, and asset management. There will be an emphasis on private equity, development and investment.

 

Topics discussed will include an overview of the speaker’s particular market segment, current industry trends, and career path strategies.  Students are expected to come to class with a general understanding of the speaker’s background, ask questions that will clarify material included in the formal presentation and raise issues not otherwise covered. 

 

This course is appropriate for students interested in gaining a practical overview of the real estate industry as well as for first and second year students intent on pursuing careers in the industry.  For real estate focused students, MBA 294.11 will serve as the foundation for Berkeley’s Accelerating Careers in Real Estate (ACRE) Program.  More information on the Berkeley Real Estate Club (BREC), the real estate industry and the ACRE program can be found at:
