CLASS FORMAT: Lecture + discussion (simultaneous)

ABSTRACT: As demographics shift with the rise of Millennials and "Generation Z," companies are realizing that their long-term success is tied to their ability to create diverse, inclusive workplaces. Research increasingly shows that diversity yields stronger financial returns and higher job satisfaction. But these gains are not won easily and have a direct relationship to the political climate. This class will examine race, socio-economics, gender, physical ability, age, and a variety of other factors implicated in the term "diversity." Students will learn about the most effective programs and interventions in the private sector with a significant emphasis on the tech sector.

REQUIRED READINGS: Primarily journal and news articles, 1-2

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE:Class participation, two short essays, one final essay

CAREER FIELD: Given the shifting demographics of the world, this course is intended for students who are eager to build and understanding of that changing workforce. Best for students intending to engage in management in the United States, though not required.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Nicole Sanchez is the VP of Social Impact at GitHub, responsible to diversifying the company's workforce and user base; building strong community partnerships; and promoting GitHub as a platform for impactful social change. She in an industry expert in diversity, inclusion and social impact with 20+ years working on access for underrepresented communities in government, higher education and technology. She is a mom, writer, native Californian and firm believer that access to technology can bring about massive social change. Nicole is an alumnae of Stanford University and UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business.
