The first meeting will be on September 4, and the course ends before the Thanksgiving holiday. 

 

The ten meeting dates are: 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/16, 10/23, 11/6, 11/13, 11/20. 

 

PREREQUISITE(S): None

 

CLASS FORMAT: Combination of instructor lecture, assigned readings, guest lecture, and a group project.

 

REQUIRED READINGS: A mixture of cases, essays, articles.  No textbook. 

 

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE:  33% class attendence, 33% class prepartion/participation, 33% group project

 

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:

 

This course will explore the spectrum of activity in the growing social enterprise area, where business models and activities are applied to address social issues.  Topics covered will include social entrepreneurship, blended value & social capital markets, globalization & trade, technology & innovation, and cross-sector models with business/nonprofit/government organizations.  Course content will include a combination of instructor lecture, reading materials on areas of focus, guest lecturers from leading social enterprise organizations, and a group project that will be highly integrated with the other course curriculum.  Classes will be is designed to provide broad exposure to the activity of the “social enterprise” arena, where mainstream, profit-focused business models & approaches are converging with traditionally service-focused nonprofit and government approaches to create innovative new solutions that address unmet human needs in more effective, efficient, and sustainable manners.  This broader inquiry of study will be constantly grounded in real-world examples and people that illustrate the topics and stimulate thinking, discussion, and learning. 

 

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:

 

Jim Schorr’s experience at the intersection of business and the social sector spans a variety of activity over the past 15 years.  Since 2000, Professor Schorr has led the growth of Juma Ventures, one of the world’s leading social enterprises.  Juma develops business enterprises to create employment opportunities for at-risk youth and was the 1st nonprofit organization in the US to operate corporate business franchises (Ben & Jerry’s shops in San Francisco).  As an MBA student at Kellogg in 1993, Jim co-founded Net Impact (then called Students for Responsible Business), and organization which has since evolved into a leading voice & force in business school education.  In recent years, Jim has been published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, guest lectured at Haas and several other MBA programs, and served as a judge in the Global Social Venture Competition annually since 2001.  Currently, Jim serves on the Board of Directors of Net Impact, Social Enterprise Alliance, Juma Ventures, and the Evergreen Lodge, an innovative for-profit social venture he helped launch in 2001.
