exercises applying frameworks

frameworks plus articles will be available on Study.Net
BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE (midterm, final,
paper(s), project(s), class participation, or a mixture): 80% deliverables
(10%Scoping letter and work plan, 10% Storyline, 30%
Midterm progress review
with client, 30% Final presentation to client) and 20% participation
in class and team
ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: A
partnership with McKinsey & Company, Social Sector Solutions (S3) develops
students’ skills in management consulting, problem solving, and project
management, while increasing their knowledge of the unique entrepreneurial
challenges of leading nonprofit/social venture/public organizations.
Instruction covers frameworks for project management, problem scoping, problem
solving, storyline, senior management consulting, team effectiveness, and
assessing nonprofit organizations. The course is built around an assignment to
1 of 12 consultation teams that works with a local client on a current issue
vital to the leadership of that client. An experienced McKinsey consultant
coaches each student team. Students will be able to rank order their

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES: Paul Jansen is
Adjunct Professor at Haas and Director Emeritus from McKinsey & Company
where he co-founded and led the Global Nonprofit Practice serving leading nonprofits
and foundations on issues of strategy and organization. He is the author of
many articles and reports challenging sector beliefs about performance,
including a co-authored report entitled, The Dynamic Board: Lessons from
High-Performing Nonprofits. Nora Silver is
Adjunct Professor and Director of the Center for Nonprofit and Public
Leadership at Haas. She brings over 30 years of leadership experience as a
two-time nonprofit founder, executive director and board member. She has
consulted internationally with more than 200 organizations, authored books and
articles on leadership and community involvement and lectured at universities
and conferences around the world.
