Please note the unorthodox format of this course which meets all day on two Saturdays.  You must attend BOTH class meetings in order to receive a passing grade.

CLASS FORMAT
This one-unit course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of the role of boards of directors in the nonprofit sector.  Specifically, the course will explore the following aspects of boards

Students will have the opportunity to meet prominent members of the Bay Area nonprofit sector, including current board members, chief executives, and development directors, to discuss their roles and learn firsthand the challenges facing these different groups in an increasingly competitive nonprofit marketplace.  
The class will consist of lectures, case studies, speakers, exercises, and a project.

REQUIRED READINGS: There will be a course reader with practical and historical articles and cases.

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: Class attendance, participation, and class project.

CAREER FIELD:  The course is recommended for students wishing to learn about the nonprofit sector, and those who will likely be called upon to serve on aboard during their successful business careers, or work in the nonprofit sector. It will provide practical and applied tools for board and nonprofit service and also present relevant context for current trends in the nonprofit sector.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: Lynne LaMarca Heinrich has served the nonprofit sector for more than 33 years. She has served cultural organizations, educational institutions, foundations, environmental organizations, and health and human service agencies in staff positions and currently as a Senior Consultant and Principal with Marts & Lundy, Inc.  She also serves as a board member of the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership at the University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business.

Ms. Heinrich's recent consulting clients include San Francisco Symphony, Sundance Institute, Columbia University, the Smithsonian Institution, Juilliard, Rutgers, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Public Radio International, National Gallery of Art, Southern California Public Radio, Save The Redwoods League, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Cal Performances, Smith College, Marin Agricultural Land Trust, University of Utah, Morton Arboretum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Los Angeles Natural History Museum, Oakland Museum of California, Planned Parenthood, and the University of California, Berkeley. She has worked closely with faculty, boards, staff, and donors to provide strategic planning and philanthropy consulting, board leadership training, and counsel for organizational change.

As a staff member, Ms. Heinrich served in roles at the Stern Grove Festival Association, Exploratorium, San Francisco Opera, The Culinary Institute of America, Vassar College, and The Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. She has provided services or counsel for more than 75 major institutions during her career.

Ms. Heinrich is a Lecturer at the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches in the Non-Profit Management Program. She is a frequent public speaker and has served in numerous volunteer positions throughout the Bay Area.
