ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND
OBJECTIVES:
This is an introductory course in real estate investment and market
analysis. The course begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of
real estate valuation, which includes a detailed coverage of mortgage financing
and taxation. We then address topics such as the economic fundamentals of
residential, commercial and industrial real estate markets, the regulation of land
use and development, and ownership strategies such as real estate investment
trusts (REITs) and real estate syndications. We also discuss current
thinking about the return to real estate investments, and recent innovation in
real estate capital markets. The course covers various property types,
including office buildings, single- and multi-family residential, retail
properties and mixed-used projects. A series of cases, taught by both industry
professionals and Prof. Couture, illustrate the key concepts and property types
covered in lectures as well as more advanced topics.
