CLASS FORMAT: The class will consist of a mixture of case-studies, lectures and guest speakers.

REQUIRED READINGS: There will be a course reader comprised of case-studies and topical readings on management strategies and the environmental policy-making, as well as a book on comparative regulatory policy.  

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: three 5-7 page individual student papers that expand upon one of the topics covered in the class (75%) and class participation (25%)

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this class is to critically explore a wide range of important private and public policy initiatives to address current environmental challenges. It examines the dynamics of the relationship among management, environmental strategies, voluntary environmental standards, and public environmental policies. The class will have a broad focus, exploring business strategies and public policies in California, the United States, the European Union, China, and internationally. Topics will include corporate-NGO relations, eco-marketing, corporate environmental strategies, trade and environment, global environmental codes of conduct, managing environmental innovation, sustainability challenges in the electronics industry, and business and public policy response responses to global climate change. Guest speakers will include other Berkeley faculty and corporate executives.   Please email the professor to request a copy of the syllabus (vogel@haas.berkeley.edu).

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:  David Vogel is a professor in the Haas School of Business and the Department of Political Science. He is the author or editor of several books on environmental policy and corporate responsibility including, National Styles of Regulation: Environmental Policy in Great Britain and the United States; Trading Up: Consumer and Environmental Regulation in a Global Economy; Transatlantic Regulatory Cooperation: The Shifting Roles of the EU, the US, and California; The Market for Virtue: The Potential and Limits of Corporate Social Responsibility; and Global Challenges in Responsible Business. His most recent book is The Politics of Precaution: Regulating Health, Safety, and Environmental Risks in Europe and the United States, published by Princeton University Press in 2012.
