REQUIRED READINGS: A combination of lecture notes, articles, and the textbook (Investments by Bodie, Kane, and Marcus, 8th ed).

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: A mix of homework, midterm, and final (detailed breakdown will be given on the first day of the class).

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
This course is designed to provide a sound foundation for the fundamental concepts in investments. Students who master the course material will acquire the analytical tools and
financial theory necessary for making investment decisions and understanding the paradigms by which financial securities are valued. This course is also designed to prepare students for more advanced finance courses on the topics covered. The course is quantitative and relies on analytical tools and economic theory developed throughout. Students should be comfortable with basic probability, statistics, and regression analysis.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Tony Tang is a research associate at the Global Market Strategies Group at Barclays Global Investors.  He earned his MBA and PhD in finance in 2007 from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.  At BGI, he focuses on originating alpha ideas using credit derivatives and country index futures.  Prior to his graduate study, he also worked at Credit Suisse and Goldman Sachs.  Recently, he has published in refereed journals such as the Journal of Financial Economics.
