PREREQUISITE(S): All core

CAREER FIELD: This class is appropriate for those who want to better understand how business affects and is affected by the public policy process in Washington. It is also useful for those with a general interest in learning about national politics and the political process.

CLASS FORMAT: The class will mostly feature presentations by lobbyists, journalists, politicians, policy experts and public policy officials in Washington - followed by questions and class discussions. 

REQUIRED READINGS: Two books about business and public policy plus shorter readings

BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: The class grade will be primarily based on a group project, and secondarily on class participation 

ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
The purpose of this class is to give you a better understanding of how the public policy process in Washington works.

The majority of class sessions will take place during your week in Washington DC and will be organized by the Washington Campus Program. The WC program is a consortium of business schools organized to help business students better understand the business of politics. There will also be an introductory session in Berkeley as well as two-three evening sessions in Washington tailored specifically for Haas students. At the final class session in Berkeley, students will present their group projects.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
David Vogel is professor emeritus at the Haas School of Business and the Department of Political Science. He is the author of several books on business and public policy, including Fluctuating Fortunes: The Power of Business in America, and The Politics of Precaution: Regulating Heath, Safety, and Environmental Risks in Europe and the United States. His most recent book, "California Greenin"  How the Golden States Became an Environmental Leader" will be published in the spring of  2018.
