PREREQUISITES: None. This course complements existing design thinking courses, with
opportunities to practice the mindsets, toolsets, and skillsets to lead
business innovation. However, a previous design thinking class is not required
to enroll.
CLASS FORMAT: In person pre-session
at Haas and intensive week in The Netherlands with additional virtual
individual and team work.
REQUIRED READINGS: None
BASIS FOR FINAL GRADE: The final
grade is a function of class participation and assessed individual and team
assignments.
CAREER FIELD: Wide relevance to all
executives who would like to deepen their understanding of problem-solving
approaches that result in creative new business concepts.
ABSTRACT OF COURSE CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
The
purpose of this course is to provide students with an interactive, highly
dynamic and deeply engaging approach to leading business innovation. Students
will learn a structured approach to a corporate business challenge--building
and deepening an understanding of design thinking, applied innovation, and entrepreneurship.
We will
focus on a corporate client and an important, board-level issue. Before
departure, students will research the topic. While at THNK, they will connect
several times with the corporate client.
Clients
will be announced at the start of the semester. Past clients include leading
companies in the Netherlands:
The
majority of the course will take place at THNK School of Creative Leadership in
Amsterdam. THNK’s curriculum draws on many different schools of thought from
design thinking to performing arts and creativity to entrepreneurship at scale
to business strategy.
BIOGRAPHICAL
SKETCH:
Rajiv
Ball is a member of the Professional Faculty at the Haas School of Business
where he teaches a number of leadership topics from design thinking to
storytelling to relationship-building. A resident of The Netherlands, he is a
Partner at THNK School of Creative Leadership where he is responsible for their
leadership curriculum and Corporate Programs. Previously, he was a partner with
McKinsey & Company for 13 years where he worked in oil and gas and retail.
During his final years at McKinsey, he was responsible for the leadership
development of 1,500 Partners globally. He has a BA in History from the
University of Cambridge and an MSc and PhD in Economic History/Development
Economics from the London School of Economics.
Sam Ha is
an innovation strategy consultant based in San Francisco. He teaches and facilitates
strategy design, leadership development, organizational culture, and futurism.
He is a strategy lead for THNK in Amsterdam and an entrepreneurship coach with
the NASDAQ Entrepreneurial Center. Previously, Sam has worked with curriculum
and students at Berkeley Haas and MIT Sloan. Sam studied business at an art
school--the MBA in Design Strategy at California College of the Arts.
