ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:
The goal of this course is to develop the fundamental principles of modern investment analysis and to help students understand how these principles can be applied in managing portfolios, valuing financial assets and using derivative instruments such as options, forwards and futures contracts. The course will begin with an analysis of risk and expected return for financial instruments, and how these considerations can be balanced when forming optimal portfolios. The insights of portfolio theory are then applied to develop models for valuing financial assets and measuring portfolio performance. Finally, derivative instruments such as options and futures contracts are introduced. Students are shown how these instruments are valued and how they can be used to manage a wide range of financial risks.

The subject matter for this course is inherently quantitative. However, the lectures and class exercises will be designed to convey the economic intuition behind the technical detail, and to help students apply these techniques meaningfully in financial analysis.
