ABSTRACT OF COURSE'S CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES:

This course is a continuation of EWMBA 203. It covers techniques for valuing projects and corporations, topics in capital structure (payout policies, distress, mergers and acquisitions, public financing), topics of interest relating to small companies (working capital management, private equity financing, venture capital), and an introduction to real options (time permitting) . The course is meant to provide a good understanding of major issues confronting financial managers in companies large and small.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH: 

Susan Cheng is currently the managing director of IDG Venture Services which oversees and coordinates activities across the IDG global family of venture and private equity funds (www.idgventures.com). In 1997, she helped to found IDG Ventures in San Francisco, a venture capital fund investing in early-stage IT and new media companies. As a general partner and CFO of the fund, Dr. Cheng represented IDG Ventures on the boards of fourteen portfolio companies. In 2007, Dr. Cheng retired from active investment in new companies. Prior to her work with IDG Ventures, Dr. Cheng was Vice President and Treasurer of Teknekron Corporation where she managed portfolios of both public and private investments.

Before entering the private equity, Dr. Cheng was an assistant professor at Columbia University Graduate School of Business and at UC-Berkeley Haas School of Business. Dr. Cheng has a PhD in finance from Stanford University, an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania – Wharton, and a MA and BA in Mathematics from the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, respectively.
