This course deals with the analysis of financial information for evaluating
past performance, predicting future performance, and estimating the value of
the firm.

A. Financial Statement Analysis and Valuation Tools
I. Introduction to Financial Statement Analysis, Forecasting, and Valuation
(using cash-flow based approaches)
Case Project: Industry Analysis of Investment Banking Case
Project: Starbucks
II. Accounting Analysis
Case Project: Boston Chicken or Enron
III. Valuation using Earnings-based and Market-based approaches
Case Project: Starbucks (revisited)
B. Valuation Applications (Students choose one/two of the following
based on their interests)
IV. Equity Analysis
Case Project: Google IPO vs. Yahoo IPO
V. Credit Analysis and Distress Prediction

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Suneel Udpa is a Visiting
Lecturer at the Haas School of Business. He received his M.S. in Business and
his Ph.D. in Accounting from Washington University, St. Louis, MO. From
1997-99, Professor Udpa was the Chair of the
Department of Accounting at St. Mary's College of California. From 1990-93, he
was an Assistant Professor of Accounting at Emory University in Atlanta. His
consulting interests are in the areas of cost systems, incentive contracts, and
valuation for mergers & acquisitions
